Description
One cotton boll, painted on antique wood ... the farmer's crop ... the reality of agriculture. How fitting that the paint has bonded with the old wood, a tenuous connection between the tree and the cotton - nature and the earth's inhabitants. Brown, green, and gray tendrils wrap around the cotton, like a hand-crocheted blanket nestled around its shoulders. ...............................................................................................................................
The paint for the cotton was laid on, one layer at a time, with a palette knife. Brown seeds peek through the folds of grays and white, baby cotton plants in the making, next year's crop perhaps. A ray of light passes over the cotton, highlighting the tips and falling playfully on the wooden floor beneath the boll, a wisp of light contrasting with the deep tones of the wood.
...............................................................................................................................
There is nothing like the feel of a cotton dress or shirt. Light and airy, or stiffly starched, cotton is cotton. A gamut of synthetic fabrics cannot compare with what the land offers ... the real stuff of the earth .. the bounty of the fields.
................................................................................................................................
Tiny veins of color run through the leaves, green and burgundy fading to brown and gray as the cotton boll ages to perfection at the time of harvest. A ray of light playfully skips across the tips of the cotton boll and then lies quietly on the wooden floor, a quiet contrast to the shadows beneath the boll. The colors of nature.
.................................................................................................................................
The original on wood has sold, but other mediums are available for sale. The wooden background is significant in all of them as well. It lends a rustic feeling to the painting, a sense of reality and focus. This piece is available on canvas, as a framed print, rolled print, metal print, giclee, or cards. It is incredibly rich and wonderfully real.
