Description
This painting captures Old San Juan, the ambiance apparent as the visitor peers down the street, taking in shop after shop. Even with modern conveniences, the old world charm remains.
...................................................................................................................
Shoppers, tourists, and locals walk the street together, everyone a part of the scene. Although this rendering pictures an empty street, Old San Juan is often overflowing with people in the hub bub of major activity. There are no parking spaces, and walkers fill both sides of the street. Police maneuver motorcycles to whip in and out as they control the foot traffic. It is only at the end of the day that stillness finally is allowed to fill the street so that its beauty is pristine and clear. It is dignified yet free, geometry with class.
.....................................................................................................................
This painting, entitled simply "Old San Juan," was first designed in pencil, the artist meticulously measuring the angles and studying the relationships between them. A modern approach was adopted for the portrayal of the street, allowing reflections in the cobblestones and bricks that play off the sides of the buildings, a bit like a mirrored image creates replays and repositioning of the sun's reflections. The angles lend a contemporary and somewhat abstract feel to the otherwise quaint setting. Even the bannisters on the overhung balconies play into the angles, as well as the metal decoration that unites the separate sides of the street into one.
...................................................................................................................
Bright colors intensify the effect, complementing the bold presentation. Unique and bold. Modern.

"Old San Juan" won first place in the Fine Art America Travel Enthusiast contest. Just a personal note: When we visited Puerto Rico, I took photographs and then did the painting from my own photos. There's not another painting like this! The image is available on canvas, as a print, phone cover, card, and even a throw pillow!
