Description
In the southern states, there are two growing seasons for cotton. The fields are planted and harvested twice a year. Rows of cotton such as these are particularly beautiful in the fall because the surrounding foliage is alive with purples, burgundies, mustard yellow, rust, gold, and green. The dark brown of the stems and bolls contrasts significantly against the white cotton.

In this scene, the fields stretch out, row after row, abundant with cotton that is just about ready to be picked. In the foreground, a cotton plant steals the spotlight, when at first glance, passersby notice it. Cars pull over to take it all in. Parents explain to their children, "Those are cotton fields. A long time ago, the cotton was picked by hand; but today massive farm equipment plucks the cotton from the plants. Then the cotton is made into clothing, just like that shirt you have on today." Of course, it's not nearly that simple for cotton to go from the boll to the back, but scenery such as this certainly makes it feel that way.
..............................................................................................................................
In Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, and Virginia, cotton is not only a way of life, but a bane for the southern farmers. Southwest states Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas also join in with cotton production; in fact, Texas often leads the states in the market, right along with its cattle sales. Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee round out the states with cotton production as well.
.............................................................................................................................. From an artist's point of view, the fields of cotton are unique in their beauty. The white cotton crops highlight the gorgeous colors of nature almost year round. There is no lovelier palette than a natural one. The artist used a palette knife to lay on the colors, building the texture of cotton. The technique is called "impasto."

Tranquil under blue skies, "Cotton Fields in Autumn" would be a wonderful addition to the decor of any home or business.
