Description
You don't ever get too far from the cotton fields. All week, the labor is focused on the rows of needy plants, watching for the damage of bugs, watering when there is drought, always staying on the alert for the growth of the plant.
.............................................................................................................................
Then on Sunday morning, the farming families put on their church clothes and head out - yep - to the cotton fields once again, because just across the fields sits the building that houses all the pews and hymnbooks. They sing about the golden gates and silently wonder if there are cotton fields in heaven. Then they pray for rain - not just on the cotton plants, but spiritual rain for the fire of repentance and the replenishing of life. They nourish their souls with words from the Good Book, ever on the alert for the growth of the men and women who line those pews out of respect for the God who brings the sun and rain and causes the cotton - and their children - to blossom and grow.
............................................................................................................................
Then they say Amen and shake hands all around. Maybe they'll have dinner on the grounds with fried chicken, ham cold cuts, and potato salad. But they'll go home at a reasonable hour. It's cotton time. They have to rest. It'll be a Sunday afternoon nap and then on to bed. They've got to rise early on Monday morning and head out to the fields.
.............................................................................................................................
With time and the change of seasons, the green leaves will begin to fade and the cotton blossoms will turn to fluffy white cotton bolls. And on another Sunday morning - a Sunday during the harvesting season - those church folks will thank God for the cotton bolls.
.............................................................................................................................
And they might just ponder what the Bible really means in the verse that says, "The fields are white unto harvest." Wonder if they'll be baptizing in the river behind the church ...
