This American Sign Language piece of art is a mixed media creation. First, the ASL sign for I LOVE YOU was painted, and then the sign for "always" and the sign for "forever" were sketched and painted with both watercolor and acrylic on a solid black canvas. The painting was then enhanced digitally to intensify the colors. The bright colors and black canvas provide a unique and striking contrast. Interpreters for the deaf sometimes wear white gloves and black clothing to create focus on their hands when they are participating in literary or poetic enactments. In much the same way, the black canvas draws special attention to the hands that shape the message.

The sign for "always" lets the index finger of the right hand make a seemingly unending circle. Equally expressive, the sign for "forever" uses the right hand to push forward; it is much like the sign for "continue." Signs that move forward from the body often indicate "future," so to "continue" into the "future" is indeed FOREVER. I love you - not just now, but every day after this - always and forever.
