Description
Picasso once painted realistically - he was called to weddings, christenings, and other memorable gatherings just as photographers are hired for those occasions today. Indeed, with the invention of the camera, Picasso went in another direction with his art, using colors and shapes in a new way defined as cubism. The images of "woman" that once looked as realistic as a photograph were then portrayed in an abstract form that was sometimes even grotesque. This piece was influenced by that way of thought.

Additionally, the color blue has been assigned meanings by artists for centuries. A dark blue can be interpreted as power - in fact, many paintings of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, show her with a dark blue cape. To bury a son would certainly require unimaginable courage and strength. An interpretation of a light 'cool' blue is that it represents level-headed presence of mind under pressure. John F. Kennedy often wore a light blue suit for his portraits. The blue of Van Gogh and Picasso shows still another interpretation in certain of their paintings - the blue that represents distress and depression. Picasso's "The Old Guitarist' is an example of his "Blue Period."

This "Blue" piece was created with brushes, but it has the texture similar to palette knife, colors layered on colors. This gives the painting richness and depth. While the artist certainly does not claim to be Picasso, this piece is inspired by Picasso's life. Surprisingly, learning from the past is often the impetus to thrust us into the future. This painting is unique and perhaps even surreal in its presentation.

Interesting style and face inspired by Picasso. Nice shades of blue contrasting with the red of the lips. A memorable artwork!
